Southern Maine opens with 2 victories

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Adam Lemieux hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th to give the University of Southern Maine a 9-6 baseball win in its opener Thursday against Ripon College.

USM held off Amherst (Mass.) College in the second game 9-6.

Tyler Delorme had two home runs and a single for three RBIs while Peter L’Italien had a homer, a double and a single for the Huskies in the first game.

Nick Thoen led Ripon (Wis.) with two home runs for three RBIs while Eric Roecker added a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth for the Red Hawks.

In the second game, righthander Ryan Adams pitched six strong innings, allowing just four hits and one run, to lead the Huskies. L’Italien hit a solo homer in the second inning and Brian Marshall slapped a two-run single. Lemieux chipped in with four singles and an RBI.

Brett Nicol hit a solo homer for Amherst.

Southern Maine splits doubleheader

At Fort Myers, Fla., Renee Heath nailed two home runs and two doubles for five RBIs to help Southern Maine beat Wesleyan 16-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. Amherst won the second game 2-1.

Sarah McLean had a home run and two doubles for four RBIs while Sunshine Anders added two singles and Darci Holland drove in two runs with a double and a single in the first game for USM.

In the second game, Jodie Eldridge allowed only two hits for 1-1 Southern Maine. Angela Cote singled and scored on a single by McLean.

Missy Mordy scored the game-winning run for Amherst on a sacrifice fly by Tamara Baer.
