ORONO — The Greek System at the University of Maine will offer volunteer services to the community Saturday, April 7. Community Service Day is part of Greek Week, which will be held from April 7 to 14. Volunteers in Community Efforts, a student volunteer organization, will assist the Greeks.
Sheri Badger, VOICE coordinator, said students will perform between two and four hours of community service to agencies that request them, primarily area homeless shelters, hospitals, school districts and similar non-profit organizations. Most services involve physical labor, such as spring cleaning and raking leaves.
Last year, 200 to 300 sorority and fraternity members participated. This year, with the help of non-Greek students and other campus organizations, it is hoped the number of volunteers will exceed 400.
Agencies requesting volunteers may contact Badger at 581-1793 by Monday, April 2. Students or organizations wishing to volunteer will meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 7, in the parking lot behind Stevens Hall. Buses will provide transportation to and from the sites.
