MACHIAS – An industrial arts teacher at Machias Memorial High School was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
Karl Kurz, 51, of Marion was summoned on the charge last summer by a Washington County sheriff’s deputy.
Kurz appeared in Machias District Court on Wednesday, but because the charge is a felony, he could not enter a plea. The case will be bound over to Superior Court.
According to court documents, Kurz was summoned in July after he allegedly put Ken Robertson of Marion “in eminent fear of bodily injury.”
Assistant District Attorney Paul Cavanaugh said his office couldn’t comment on the case beyond saying that the incident apparently involved a gun and a dispute over a right of way and property lines that got out of hand.
Kurz remains free on unsecured bail of $2,500 on conditions that he have no contact with Robertson and no use or possession of alcohol.
Machias schools Superintendent Betty Jordan said Thursday that she could not comment on personnel matters. Jordan confirmed that Kurz continues his duties at the high school.
A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 20.
