Jamie Wells leads Husson to sweep of Fisher

BOSTON – Jamie Wells pitched a shutout and a no-hitter as the Husson College Braves beat Fisher College 11-0 and 14-0 in softball action Friday.

Wells had started the season 0-8 and Husson had started 0-10. Wells pitched five perfect innings in the second half of the doubleheader before obtaining the second mercy-rule victory of the day. Wells never allowed a runner on base while striking out six batters in the second game.

The freshman pitcher went all five innings in the first game of the day as well. She struck out nine batters, did not allow a walk and gave up four singles. Wells also singled twice and drove in a run.

Erin Weston paced the Husson batters with two singles, a double and a home run. She finished with five RBIs, scored three runs and notched four stolen bases. Kerri Tuck added four singles, a double, two RBIs and scored six runs.

Bowdoin wins, ties against UNE

At Biddeford, Katie Sheridan’s groundout RBI in the eighth inning gave Bowdoin the 5-4 win in the first game of the doubleheader at the University of New England.

Trailing 4-2 in the seventh inning of game one, the Polar Bears tied the game on run-scoring singles by Emily Rizza and Kristi Royer. Gina Laughelli picked up the victory in relief, holding UNE hitless while striking out three in 1? innings, to improve her record to 4-1.

Extra innings in game one led to game two being called in the fifth inning due to darkness at a 1-1 tie.

Husson holds Fisher winless

At Boston, the Braves kept Fisher College winless while sweeping a doubleheader.

Husson of Bangor won the opener 9-0 and took the second game 7-2.

Dave Dostie allowed two hits and struck out 11 batters in six innings for his first win of the season in the opener. Barrett Dionne came on in the seventh to seal the win with a 1-2-3 inning.

Craig Harvey led the Braves in the twinbill with three doubles, a single and two RBIs. John McGlinn added a triple, single and RBI in game one, while Aaron Brideau hit a double and two singles with two RBIs in game two.

Keith Simmons (1-1) scattered six hits and struck out five in the second game. Simmons (1 RBI) and Kyle Mathieu (3 RBIs) each recorded a double and two singles in the first game of the day.

At Norton, Mass., Will Bissonnette snapped a tie game in with an RBI double and later scored as part of a four-run sixth inning to lead Wheaton College to the win.

Southern Maine, ranked second in this week’s New England Baseball Coaches Association poll and eighth nationally, was led by Craig Gureckis’ three-run home run in the fourth inning that cut the deficit to one run.

The Huskies tied the game 5-5 in the fifth inning on Andy Lang’s two-run homer and USM got one last run in the seventh inning when Chris Waymon was walked with the bases loaded.
