In Maine, referendums can be put on a ballot just by gathering enough signatures to have them placed on the ballot. If this is the case why do we even need a Legislature? Why not just allow our elected officials to do the job they were elected to do in the first place? If the referendum process was so great then why do most states not have such system in place? The states that did have such process back in the 1960s have abolished it.
The federal government does not even allow this process. We elect our representatives to do a job and by electing them we are putting our trust in them. Why try to infringe on their responsibilities that they were elected to do by using this referendum and peoples veto process? Isn’t it time Maine gets with the times and abolish the referendum and people’s veto process? Our legislators should do the job they were elected to do without interference by special interest groups, persons who do not like a particular law, etc. Daniel A. Boggs Jr. Biddeford
