With his car parked sideways in the driveway and tire tracks on the lawn of a Fourth Street home, a wayward motorist tried to convince Bangor police early Saturday that he was home.
Home for the man, however, was on Third Street, one street over.
Police were called to the Fourth Street home shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday, and Officer James Dearing reported that it was apparent from the tread marks that the car had been driven backward on the lawn before coming to rest sideways on the driveway, up against a tree.
Both car doors were locked and a man inside was apparently passed out, still buckled in with his foot on the brake, Dearing reported. The officer knocked on the window, prompting the driver to scream and jump forward. In doing so, he fell onto the car’s horn, which sounded and caused the man to scream some more, according to the police report.
Eventually the man, identified as James R. Sirois, 50, calmed down and rolled down the window. The man reeked of liquor, his eyes were glassy and his speech slurred as he told Dearing that he had just parked his car outside his home, according to the police report.
Dearing arrested him, charging him with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants. Dearing reported that the man’s blood-alcohol content registered 0.19 percent on the Intoxilyzer test, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Alcohol also figured into an incident in Orono over the weekend.
Police were called to an apartment building at 61 College Ave. about 4 a.m. Sunday after a tenant reported that he had awakened to find an unknown male standing at the foot of his bed.
When the tenant screamed out, the visitor – who entered from an unlocked door – fled to the basement, where he was found curled up on the floor in a fetal position, according to a police report by Officer Sam Blalack of the Orono Police Department.
After the intruder was roused by building occupants, he made his way outside, and that is where he was when Blalack arrived.
Matthew Butler-Bugher, an 18-year-old dorm resident at the University of Maine, was charged with criminal trespass. He is scheduled to appear in Bangor District Court on Dec. 22.
According to the police report, the student admitted to having consumed “a lot” of alcohol before his visit to the apartment building and insisted he was on campus when Blalack asked him if he knew where he was.
The student told the officer that he had been at a party where people wrote on him and laughed at him. A white T-shirt he had been wearing was covered in writing, according to police.
The student said he was bleeding because he had cut himself when he fell on a rock as he was leaving the party. The student then told Blalack that he was tired and just wanted to go home. After he was detained briefly, Butler-Bugher was returned to campus.
A Bangor woman was charged with robbery, two counts of assault and felony theft after trying to leave the Wal-Mart store in Bangor on Sunday with thong panties in a rainbow of hues.
According to reports by Officers Jim Dearing and Ed Potter of the Bangor Police Department and two Wal-Mart employees, Anna Babcock, 38, was shopping with another local woman when she was seen concealing at least seven pairs of thong underwear in the front of her uniform bottoms. Babcock reportedly shopped some more, selecting a pajama set, toilet paper and envelopes before making her way to the register lane. Babcock then left the store without paying for the undergarments, according to the police report.
After leaving the store, Babcock was approached by store security workers, who asked her about the items concealed in her clothing. The shopper allegedly denied having taken anything. When asked to accompany security staff back into the store, Babcock refused to cooperate and tried to leave.
She allegedly shoved one of the store staffers who was trying to detain her and tried to leave in her car. Babcock allegedly tossed her keys to her shopping companion and told her to get in the car. Babcock’s own effort to climb aboard failed when one of the Wal-Mart staffers blocked her access.
At this point, Babcock attempted to flee by foot, according to reports. She ran toward a nearby KFC restaurant, then into a nearby wooded area, where she fell into a gully before exiting. She then ran behind a ski shop, where she met up with police. A check of the wooded area turned up some of the merchandise, while other pairs of underwear were found in the vicinity of Babcock’s car.
According to Dearing, Babcock is no stranger to local authorities. She had theft convictions dating to at least the early 1980s, he said.
