E PLANTATION – Two Aroostook County men were treated for gunshot wounds on Wednesday as a result of gun accidents.

Travis Kinney, 25, of Bridgewater was bird hunting along a woods road in E Plantation west of Blaine when he accidentally shot himself in the little toe of his left foot, according to Lt. Mike Marshall of the Maine Warden Service.

Kinney was driving an all-terrain vehicle when he saw a bird, Marshall said. He stopped and got off the ATV to load an older model .22-caliber single shot rifle. As he was doing so, the gun jammed and accidentally discharged.

Kinney used a cellular phone to call his brother to come get him. He was taken to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle for treatment.

The incident is being investigated by Sgt. Fred Jackson of the Warden Service and Warden Brian Cain.

In Fort Fairfield, Allan McManus, 24, of Fort Fairfield suffered a gunshot wound to his lower right leg when his .22-caliber hand gun accidentally discharged.

Fort Fairfield Police Chief Joseph Bubar said McManus was driving south on Presque Isle Street when the gun went off in his vehicle. The bullet passed through McManus leg, Bubar said, but McManus was able to drive himself to the hospital in Presque Isle, where he was treated and then released.

No charges will be filed since McManus has a permit carry a concealed weapon, the police chief said.
