MONMOUTH – The Maine Warden Service investigated the shooting of a Monmouth hunter who was hit in the chest with buckshot but survived.

Daniel McCallister, 35, was shot Wednesday morning, according to Mark Latti, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service. McCallister was in stable condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and was expected to be released Thursday.

Details of how McCallister was shot were unclear. He and his brother were just over a knoll off Sanborn Road, which runs between state Route 135 and Lewiston Road.

Maine State Police dogs were brought in to find the exact location of the shooting, but could not find it, Latti said.

“Until we can get to the scene and recreate the incident, we won’t have many details,” he said.

A second hunter, Colby Oakes, suffered injuries to his legs and arms in another hunting accident Wednesday in Vinalhaven.

Maine has had two hunting fatalities since the 2000 deer season began. Frank Moore, 23, of Mexico was accidentally shot in the back by another hunter in Carmel last month. The second victim, Jason Stoddard, 24, of Sidney, was shot by a member of his hunting party. This incident occurred in the Augusta area.
