2 surgeons join staff at hospital

BELFAST – Drs. Paul F. Stewart Jr. and Stephen E. Cook, both board-certified surgeons, have joined the active medical staff at Waldo County General Hospital, bringing the total to 46 members.

Stewart is opening a practice in general surgery, while Cook joins the emergency department.

Stewart received his undergraduate degree at St. Joseph’s University and his doctor of medicine degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College, both in Philadelphia. He completed an internship and surgical residency at Abington Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania and is certified by the American Board of Surgeons.

Most rcently, Stewart was senior surgeon at Abington Memorial Hospital and attending surgeon at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Meadowbrook, Pa. He has held teaching positions at Hahnemann Medical College, Temple University and Jefferson Medical College. Other professional duties included surgical intensive care education and co-directorship of a shock and trauma unit.

Cook received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati and his bachelor’s degree in biology from Harvard University. He completed a general surgical residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland and a peripheral vascular surgical fellowship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.

Board-certified in general surgery, Cook has additional training in abdominal laparoscopic surgery, vascular surgery, endoscopy, arteriography and endovascular surgery. He has written articles on noninvasive vascular testing such as carotid artery imaging and qualified for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
