FAIRFIELD – A father and his son lost their belongings to fire late Friday night. The fire at 240 Martin Stream Road demolished the mobile home that was being rented by the pair, whose identities were not known to fire officials.
Lt. Jack Adams said the fire appeared to have stemmed from a wood stove. He said the fire, which started in the living room of the trailer, was difficult to battle because the floors burned. An assortment of debris around the trailer also made it difficult for firefighters to control the blaze, he said.
Adams said Winslow, Waterville and Oakland firefighters assisted Fairfield firefighters at the scene and Clinton firefighters remained on stand-by at the Fairfield station.
With the price of oil, Adams said many homeowners have switched to wood and are burning green wood. He cautioned that homeowners should beware of creosote buildup that occurs from burning green wood. He said local firefighters are willing to check and clean chimneys.
