AUGUSTA – To celebrate a move to new facilities, the Augusta branch of Alpha One and Alpha One Medical will host an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the new location at 424 Western Ave., Augusta.
The move will allow the branch to broaden its services to mid-coast, central and western Maine. The group now serves consumers in Androscoggin, Franklin, Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Oxford, Sagadahoc, Somerset and Waldo counties.
During the open house event at 5 p.m., Steven Tremblay, president of Alpha One, will dedicate the branch’s conference room to the late Kim D. Wallace of Hallowell.
Wallace began working for Alpha One in Augusta in 1986 as the first branch manager and legislative liaison.
In 1997, Wallace became Alpha One’s public policy analyst, which required extensive work at the State House, the Legislature and in Washington, D.C., Tremblay said.
Alpha One is a nonprofit center for independent living with headquarters in South Portland and offices in Augusta, Brewer and Presque Isle. Alpha One provides a range of independent-living services to more than 6,000 people with disabilities annually.
Alpha One is managed and staffed by people with disabilities.
Alpha One Medical is Alpha One’s wholly owned durable medical equipment company with sales and service sites in South Portland, Augusta and Lewiston.
Established in 1978, Alpha One is nationally recognized as an innovator in services for individuals with disabilities. Many similar programs have been implemented across the country.
