Southern Maine men sweep Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Southern Maine had 35 hits and scored 27 runs Saturday to sweep Rhode Island College 20-0 and 7-0 in softball action.

In the first game, Ryan Adams and Neil Hutchings combined for a three-hit shutout. Adam Lemieux had a double and three singles for four RBIs while Pat McCarthy added a two-run single and two RBI singles.

Jeff Steere took the loss for Rhode Island College.

In the second game, which was called after seven innings due to darkness, Andy Lang led the Huskies with three singles and an RBI. Tyler DeLorme had two singles and two RBIs. Gureckis chipped in with an RBI double.

RIC’s Jim Milano took the loss.

At Waltham, Mass., Andrew Kahn and K.C. Tenukas each had two singles Saturday to help lead Brandeis to the win.

Jim Freethey contributed a solo home run while Nick Adams had a single and scored a run.

Howard Rutherford hit a double and single for Saint Joseph’s of Standish while Lucas Hannigan added an RBI single.

Softball

Harvard posts sweep of Maine

At Cambridge, Mass., Tiffany Whitton won the first game with a solo home run, then knocked in five runs in the second game to lead Harvard to a Saturday sweep of the University of Maine.

The Crimson won the opener 1-0 and took the second game 7-3.

In the first game, Whitton nailed a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to give Harvard the win.

Aliesha Rautenber had two singles for Maine behind freshman Jenna Merchant, who pitched a three-hitter.

In the second game, Whitton had a double and two singles for five RBIs to pace the Crimson. Cecily Gordon had an RBI double and Sara Williamson had an RBI single.

Nicole Taylor had a double and a single for two RBIs for Maine while Sara Asadoorian contributed two singles.

Maine Maritime splits doubleheader

At Weston, Mass., Maine Maritime Academy split a Saturday doubleheader with Lasell, winning the first game 11-9 then losing the second game 5-4.

In the first game, MMA of Castine scored 11 runs on 11 hits to take the win. Abbi Darling hit a single and a double for two RBIs and Caitlin Carr sent home two runs on two singles. Alaina Hanlon, Janice Spear and Stacey Ryan each had two hits for Mariners.

Britney Falite led Lasell with three singles for five RBIs.

In the second game, Cindy Matthews scored the game-winning run on an MMA error in the bottom of the eighth.

Spear had a double and two singles with two RBIs while Maygan Hardison added two singles.

W. Connecticut sweeps So. Maine

At Danbury, Conn., Western Connecticut swept the University of Southern Maine 1-0 and 6-2 in a doubleheader on Saturday.

In the first game, Amy Zaslaw scattered four hits for the shutout. Christine Valie had a pinch-hit double after which Amy Warren advanced on a sacrifice bunt then scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice.

Sunshine Anders had two singles for Southern Maine of Gorham.

In the second game, Vickie Smith and Melissa Walsh each had two singles for Western Connecticut.

Emily Forbes had an RBI single for the Huskies while Sarah McLean added a double, two singles and scored a run.

Colby 11, Amherst 9

At Amherst, Mass., Bill Spencer led 3-1 Colby to victory Saturday with two goals and four assists.

Josh Cleaver and Ryan Kane each scored two goals for the White Mules of Waterville, while Barron Butler added a goal and three assists. Chris Larson had a goal and an assist while Blake Grosich, Eric Seidel and Matt Roland had a goal apiece.

John Shea made 10 saves on 34 shots.

Chris Condlin and Colby Griffeth each scored two goals and had an assist for Amherst. Mike Allison and Matt Margolis each added a goal and an assist.

Tucker Sowers and Craig McBeth also had goals. Cushing Donelan faced 27 shots and made 10 saves for the 3-2 Lord Jeffs.
