Haystack craft school gains $120,000 grant

DEER ISLE – Haystack Mountain School of Crafts has been awarded a $120,000 grant over three years to support programs for teen-agers and Maine art teachers. The grant from the Surdna Foundation will allow the international craft school to expand its programs for local teens, including a four-day fall workshop for 75 area high school students.

In addition, the grant will support expansion of the Haystack Artist’s Residency program that brings prominent craft makers, visual and performing artists to Deer Isle to work with middle school students.

Finally, the grant will help strengthen Haystack’s connections with Maine art teachers and students by awarding fellowships in each of the next three years to four Maine art educators who teach on the secondary level, as well as to one student each from Deer Isle-Stonington High School and George Stevens Academy.
