Crash kills Orland woman Police say driver may have fallen asleep at wheel

ORLAND – Police said Tuesday they believe a driver may have fallen asleep before a Route 1 crash that killed an 85-year-old Orland woman.

Minnie Bowden was in a 1996 Oldsmobile that strayed into the oncoming lane of traffic at about 3:30 p.m. Monday and hit a pickup truck.

She died of massive body trauma at a Bangor hospital later Monday. The Oldsmobile, driven by her husband, Donald Bowden, 82, hit a 1989 Chevy pickup driven by Rachel Kimball, 60, of Orland.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Tuesday, according to a report issued by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Lt. Jim Willis said that police believe Donald Bowden may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Donald Bowden suffered internal injuries and remained in stable condition at a Bangor hospital. Kimball suffered chest and leg injuries and was in stable condition, according to a police report.

Rescue units from the Orland Fire Department and Bucksport Public Safety provided assistance.
