Families of fishermen to benefit from fund

BAR HARBOR – A charitable fund has been established for the families of three Jonesport area fishermen who drowned when their mussel dragger overturned during a Dec. 14 storm.

Dawson Allen, 22, of Jonesport, Michael Laytart, 39, of Addison and the boat’s captain, 21-year-old Dwayne Smith of Jonesport, were buried Wednesday after a memorial service at Jonesport-Beals High School. The service was attended by more than 700 people.

Allen leaves a wife and a 2-year-old daughter. Laytart is survived by his wife, a 6-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter. Smith is survived by his parents and three sisters.

Those wishing to contribute to the fund can do so through the United Pentecostal Church, P.O. Box 206, Jonesport 04649 or the Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society, 127 West Street, Bar Harbor 04609.

A memorial register is available online at www.legacy.com.
