Danger in living near the woods

This is in response to the letter by Phyllis Adams (Readers Write, Nov. 14). Phyllis recommends that all “hunters go to the northern Maine woods away from populated towns” where she determines “all other hunters should be.” Well, Phyllis, my family and I live in northern Maine and we are blessed with acres of forest all around us. Neither my husband nor I hunts, yet we, like many of our neighbors, must contend with our fair share of hunters.

We, too, must curtail our long walks through the woods or back roads unless we wear blaze orange clothing. Even then, we avoid the woods. Your suggestion is a very selfish one and shows a lack of consideration for fellow Mainers. Those of us who live in the less populated areas are really no different than you, Phyllis. We cut firewood, we take time to enjoy nature, we have children who play outdoors and, like you, do not appreciate the potentially dangerous situation that living near the woods puts us in during hunting season….
