Massachusetts takes two from Black Bears

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts swept a college softball doubleheader from the University of Maine Thursday, 3-1 win in the first game and 6-2 in the second.

In the first game, Jennifer Hadley tossed seven innings of one-run, three-hit ball, with seven strikeouts to pace the Minutewomen. Teri Rooney scored on a single by Scooter Wheeler.

Leigh Ann Hlywak provided the Black Bears’ run with a solo homer.

In the nightcap, the Bears scored first on a two-run single by Nicole Taylor.

Kaila Holtz and Nicole Wilson each recorded two-run singles to spark UMass.

Nor’easters sweep twinbill

At Biddeford, the University of New England outscored Gordon College 14-1 in sweeping a doubleheader, 9-1 in the opener and 5-0 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Amanda Brown surrendered just three hits, and the Nor’easters took advantage of six Gordon errors.

Michelle Clark drove in three runs and had a pair of singles for the winners. Kalina Cuarisma added two singles.

In the nightcap, UNE scored four times in the first inning to roll to the win. Sarah Bernier and Charity LaBelle combined to toss a two-hit shutout, striking out nine.

Amber Taylor smacked three singles and drove in two runs for the winners. Amanda Brown and Cuarisma had two singles each.

Bowdoin wins two

At Brunswick, Bowdoin College picked up a pair of wins over UMaine-Farmington, 8-1 in the opener and 5-1 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Kristie Miller jacked a two-run homer for the Polar Bears. Erin Hanley went the distance, allowing just five hits and striking out seven.

Sophia Stanley had an RBI single for the Beavers.

In the second game, Emily Rizza smacked a triple and drove in a run, and Kristie Miller went 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Jessie Poulin tossed five innings of one-run, five-hit ball for the winners. She also fanned struck out seven.

Richelle Dube drove in the Beavers’ only run on a single.

UM-Presque Isle drops two

At Warwick, Rhode Island, Castleton State University swept a doubleheader from the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 13-3 in the opener and 8-3 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Jesse Kyhill went 5 for 5 with two doubles, three singles, and two RBIs for the winners. Chad Phillips had two singles plus an RBI, and Mike Howe added two singles.

Greg Ingalls smacked an RBI double for the Owls. Royce Blanchard singled and doubled. Dustin Suppa and Marcus Nadeau each had an RBI singe.

In the second game, Rich Whitney had a double to go with a two-run single and Kyhill added an RBI single to pace the winners.

Brandon Traknis had a pair of RBI singles for UM-Presque Isle and Greg Ingalls doubled.
