HAMPDEN — The superintendent of schools here is reviewing a report from a special committee evaluating a complaint by a parent that two books contained in a district elementary school library are inappropriate and in poor taste.
The books under review are “A Light in the Attic” and “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” both collections of poems and drawings by Shel Silverstein.
Both are part of the library collection at the Earl C. McGraw School in Hampden.
Superintendent Carlton Dubois said he would reviewing the committee’s report this weekend and expects to meet with the parent Monday. If the parent is not satisfied the results of the review committee’s report, he said, the next step would be to go before the SAD 22 board of directors.
Such requests for reconsidering school curriculums or educational materials are provided for under school board policy, but Dubois said this was the first time since he had been there that such a formal request had been made. Dubois has been superintendent for the towns of Hampden, Newburgh and Winterport for the past eight years.
The review committee included a school principal, a library media specialist, a classroom teacher and a community member.
Silverstein has written numerous books for both children and adults as well as being a folk singer and composer. Other children’s books by the author include “Giraffe and a Half,” “Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back” and “The Giving Tree.”
A former correspondent for Stars and Stripes, Silverstein was also a reporter for Playboy magazine and published some adult-oriented books, including a cartoon book in 1979 titled “Different Dances.”
