Electrical fire destroys Brewer mobile home Damaged electrical wire blamed for Day Road blaze

BREWER – A damaged electrical wire was blamed for a fire Tuesday afternoon that destroyed a mobile home on the Day Road.

The mobile home at 191 Day Road belonged to Reva Hollis, who called the Fire Department from a neighbor’s home after she smelled something burning and saw a smoky haze near appliances, according to Lt. Dennis Tinkham of the Brewer Fire Department.

Tinkham said the fire began after noon and apparently was sparked by a damaged wire that ran underneath the mobile home to Hollis’ clothes dryer. The wire apparently arced, eventually starting a fire that burned through the floor of the home into the kitchen and bedroom areas.

Tinkham said that Hollis was able to save some of her belongings, including photographs, jewelry and a family Bible. She reportedly planned to stay with family members Tuesday night.

A dollar estimate for damage was not immediately available. Tinkham said the 70-foot 1987 Amberwood mobile home, which had significant fire and smoke damage, was insured.

Eddington and Holden fire departments assisted Brewer firefighters at the scene. Holden also provided station coverage during the incident, Tinkham said. Though firefighters had the fire under control within a half-hour of their arrival, they remained at the fire scene for several hours to watch for hot spots and investigate the cause.
