Frigid Five K race set for Winterfest

LUBEC — The Frigid Five K road race will be the sports highlight of this year’s Winterfest, sponsored by the International Friends Committee.

The five-kilometer (3.1-mile) race will be held Jan. 26, starting at 10 a.m. Eastern time. Participants will meet at Lubec High School, where buses will take them to the starting line on Campobello Island, New Brunswick. The finish line will be back at Lubec High School, where racers may shower, change clothes and enjoy a home-cooked spaghetti dinner, prepared by IFC volunteers.

Pre-registration, which ends Jan. 22, is $5. Those registering on race day will pay $6. Registration forms will be available from local recreation departments in Ellsworth, Machias, Lubec and Calais, and in St. Stephen, St. Andrews and Saint John, New Brunswick.

Top male and female winners will each be awarded a dinner at Lubec’s Home Port Inn and runners-up will receive IFC sweatshirts. Ribbons will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age category. The international course was laid out by IFC Director Tom Baker, with assistance from Dale Calder and Bion McFadden.

Winterfest `91, Jan. 24-27, will include indoor and outdoor activities for all ages. For more information about the race or other Winterfest activities, call the IFC at (506) 752-2021. All proceeds from Winterfest `91 will benefit the IFC’s recreational and educational programs in the border region.
