Bates men, Thomas set 3-point marks

LEWISTON – Two NCAA Division III records – one for most 3-point field goals made and the other for most 3-pointers attempted – were set in Bates’ 120-108 men’s basketball win over Thomas here Wednesday night.

Host Bates College and Thomas of Waterville combined to make 34 3-pointers, while totaling 65 attempts. Both are national records, according to the Bates sports information office.

Bates canned 19 3-pointers from behind the 19-foot-9 arc and Thomas put in 15.

Sean McDonagh and Tim Collins led the 3-point parade for 6-2 Bates with 7 each. McDonagh totaled 35 points and Collins had 25.

Darrell Akins chipped in with three, 3-pointers for the winners and Keith Ferdinando added two. Ferdinando and Akins each put in 17 points.

Bates also set two team records. Akins set a record for most assists in one game with 15 and the 120 points are the highest point total ever for a Bates team.

Jim Ward paced 3-6 Thomas with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Steve Freeman contributed three, 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. Vic Patoklo finished with a team-high 29 points.
