SKOWHEGAN — On Saturday, Feb. 2, Eaton Mountain on Route 2 in Skowhegan will host the third annual Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Winter Carnival to raise funds to continue the program to educate sixth-graders in SAD 54 about how to resist drug and alcohol use.
A day of winter activities is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., sponsored by the Skowhegan Sno-Hawks and the Abanaki Sno-Riders, who will provide snowmobile rides at the event.
Dog sled rides will be offered by Tim Diehl of Stratton, and a horse-drawn sleigh ride with David Robinson at the reins will be offered.
A bonfire, with singing and a marshmallow roast, is planned by the Skowhegan Sportsman Club.
There will be a snowman-making contest, a snow-sculpturing contest and snow tug of war event with the Skowhegan Jaycees holding registration.
Competitive racing will be held, with a dual slalom ski race scheduled for 2 p.m. The race will utilize either skis or snowboards at Eaton Mountain and is sponsored by the Skowhegan Ski Boosters.
Four cross-country ski races will be held at The Tree Farm Touring Center on the Huff Hill Road in Cornville at 10 a.m. The race is sponsored by Holden Cyclery of Skowhegan and the Tree Farm Touring Center. Competitor categories and distances are as follows: Juniors I (up to age 7),a 1-kilometer race; Juniors II (8-16 years), 5-kilometer; Seniors (17-34 years), 10-kilometer; and Masters (35 and older), 10-kilometer.
Fees for cross-country ski races will be $4 for adults and $1 for children. For more informaton, call John Hodges, race chief, at 474-2859.
Students Against Drunk Driving and SAD 54 cheerleaders will compete for the honor of king and queen of the carnival. The winners will appear at the Mercer Bog String Band concert held at The Opera House/Municipal Building on Water Street to receive their prizes and to be crowned by last year’s winners, Michael Drake and Brett Lowe.
