Bears take 3 of 4 from Vermont

ORONO – The University of Maine Black Bears improved their America East conference record to 5-3 by beating Vermont three times in a four-game weekend series at Kessock Field.

The Black Bears swept the Catamounts on Sunday, shutting them out 1-0 and 3-0.

Maine won Saturday’s first game 8-0 before Vermont came back to win the second 2-1.

In Saturday’s first game, Leigh Ann Hlywak hit a home run, a double and two singles and scored two runs to lead Maine to the win.

Sara Asadoorian scored three runs and added three singles for the Black Bears.

Jamie Sawyer and Kristy Winberg each had singles for Vermont.

In the second game, Erica Sobel had two singles and an RBI for Maine while Aliesha Rautenber hit a triple, single and scored a run.

Christine Toomey and Megan Collis each hit two singles for Vermont.

In Sunday’s first game, Sobel drove in Leigh Ann Hlywak with one out in the eighth inning to give the Bears the victory.

Hlywak added a double for the winners. Candace Jaegge and Jenna Merchant combined on the shutout.

In the second game, Merchant went the distance for Maine, striking out six and walking in shutting out Vermont.

Melissa Mather drove in two runs with a pinch hit double in the sixth inning and Aliegha Rautenberg plated a run on a sacrifice fly for the Black Bears.

Husson sweeps UM-Presque Isle

At the Husson College field in Bangor, Jamie Wells’ pitching and hitting led the Braves to a sweep of their Saturday doubleheader with the University of Maine-Presque Isle.

Husson won the opener 6-3 and the second game 4-1. Sunday’s games were postponed.

In the first game, Wells, Erin Weston, and Kerri Tuck each rapped a pair of singles, and Wells struck out four in picking up the win.

Jamie Landeen posted a double, single, and two RBIs, and Melina Golden had a double.

In the second game, Wells recorded three singles and earned her second win. Nicole Duplisea had a single and two stolen bases.

Landeen hit three singles for the Owls, and Nina Michaud tripled.

USM sweeps UMass-Dartmouth

At North Dartmouth, Mass., Saturday, the Huskies had a pair of solid pitching performances to give them 1-0 wins over UMass-Dartmouth.

In the first game, Sarah McLean had the Huskies’ only hit, a solo homer in the seventh to provide the winning margin.

Melissa Henderson earned the complete-game win, fanning seven and scattering five hits.

In the second game, Emily Forbes’ sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, scored Renee Heath with the game-winning run, this time in the sixth inning.

Jodie Eldrige picked up the win for Southern Maine, striking out three and allowing four hits in a complete-game effort.

U-New England sweeps Nichols

At Biddeford, the Nor’easters took two games from Nichols College (Mass.) 3-0 and 3-2.

In the first game, Charity LaBelle pitched a four-hit shutout to help give University of New England the win.

Christie Monteith had two hits for UNE while Emily Willoughby and Kristen Swallow each had a hit and a run.

Jen Solomon hit a double and two singles while Jessie Stevens had the fourth hit for Nichols College of Dudley, Mass.

In the second game, Willoughby, Amber Taylor, and Shannon Gerrish each had two singles for the Nor’Easters while Michelle Clark had an RBI triple and Monteith added and RBI single.

Stevens and Solomon had a single and a run apiece for Nichols.

UMF sweeps Lyndon State

At Farmington Sunday, the UMaine-Farmington softball team upped its record to 12-7 in sweeping a doubleheader from Lyndon State (Vt.) by scores of 8-4 and 11-2.

In the first game, Cynthia Ravinski had two hits and two RBIs to power the Beavers. Heather Marden and Morgan Hann also had two hits for the winners.

In the second game, Sophia Stanley knocked in four runs in the first three innings to spark UMaine-Farmington.

Jessica Wenckus fanned five batters and allowed two runs on seven hits in an complete-game effort.

St. Joe’s splits two with Thomas

At Waterville, Thomas College defeated St. Joseph’s 5-4 then lost the second game 9-7 in a doubleheader on Saturday.

In the first game, Courtney Corbett led Thomas with a double and two singles for three RBIs. Jamie Kolis had two singles while Dee Kelly chipped in with an RBI single and Marissa Ellsworth scored three runs and had a single.

Deirdre Regan batted in a run on two singles for St. Joseph’s while Sue Picard had a two-run single and Courtney Sirois helped out with two singles.

In the second game, Kelly Premo hit a triple and two singles for two RBIs to help lead the Monks the win. Allyson Ferguson had two singles for three RBIs while Sirois sent home a run on a triple and a single. Deborah Bain contributed with a triple, a single, and an RBI.

Dee Kelly had a triple, a double, two singles and an RBI for Thomas while Katie Morrell added two singles for one RBI.

Bates, Babson split

At Lewiston Sunday, Bates College split a softball doubleheader, with the Bobcats winning the opener 3-2, and Babson taking the second game 5-4.

In the first game, Cami Dyson led Bates with two hits, including the game-winning RBI single in the fifth.

Krissie Whiting tossed a complete-game four-hitter, allowing no earned runs.

In the second game, Dyson went 2 for 4 with an RBI single for the Bobcats, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Michelle Malone hit a bases-clearing double to spark a four-run sixth for Babson. Georgia Howe, from Hallowell, retired the last nine batters.

At Plymouth, N.H., Saturday, Ryan Adams hurled a four-hit shutout as the Huskies downed the Panthers.

The game was the first of a scheduled doubleheader, but the second was suspended in the seventh inning due to rain, with the teams deadlocked at eight.

Andy Lang had an RBI double for Southern Maine and Craig Gureckis belted a solo homer in the ninth for the Huskies.

At Gorham, Sunday, Brian Marshall singled home the deciding run in the bottom of the eighth to earn the Huskies a win.

Tyler Delorme, who eventually scored the game-winner, doubled for the winners. Adam Lemieux went the distance, giving up five hits for Southern Maine.

Beavers take two from Lyndon

At Farmington Sunday, the Beavers plated 18 runs in two games to take a doubleheader from Lyndon State (Vt.), 12-10 in the opener and 6-5 in the second game.

In the first game, John Rutkiewicz broke a 9-9 tie with a three-run blast in the fifth, and the Beavers hung on for the win.

James Writer also homered for UM-Farmington. Keith LeBlanc hammered out three hits for the Beavers.

In the second game, Kris Garrow knocked home the winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored Zach Reed.

Reed also had a two-run homer for the winners. He was also the winning pitcher, scattering 11 hits and five runs.

Bates, Amherst split

At Lewiston Sunday, Bates salvaged a split with Amherst, winning the second game 7-6. Amherst took the opener 3-0.

In the second game, Ben Donaldson went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, with a double and solo homer for Bates. Nate Maxwell went 2 for 5 with two RBIs. John Furbush retired six of the last seven batters to record the save.

In the first game, Jeff Leduc tossed a complete-game four hitter, striking out five and walking only one.

Mike Kinsman tossed a complete game for the Bobcats. He allowed six hits, three runs, fanned six and walked none.

Thomas splits two with St. Joseph’s

At Standish, Thomas College won the first game 6-5 and lost the second 5-3 to split a doubleheader with Saint Joseph’s on Saturday.

In the first game, Ryan O’Connor led Thomas with three singles for an RBI while Travis Hotham added two singles for one RBI. Corey Pelletier helped out with two singles and two runs scored.

Derek McIntosh nailed a grand slam home run for St. Joseph’s while Howard Rutherford contributed with and RBI single.

In the second game, Jesse LaCasse scored two runs and hit a home run and two singles for two RBIs to help give the Monks the win. Brad Wheaton helped out with a single and a run scored.

Josh Porter led the Terriers with two singles and an RBI.

Colby, Trinity split doubleheader

At Waterville, Colby defeated Trinity 6-5 then lost the second game 12-3 in a doubleheader on Saturday.

In the first game, B.L. Lippert capped a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh with a game-winning home run to give Colby the win.

Greg Spanos and Andrew Freimuth each had two-run homers for the White Mules while Spanos also had an RBI single.

Kevin Tidmarsh pitched a complete game for Trinity.

In the second game, Jayme Dorr and Alan Andreini led Trinity with two singles, two RBIs and two runs apiece.

Kevin Brunelle and Matt Simard each hit three singles for Colby as well as scoring all three runs while Lippert added an RBI single.
