Vinalhaven man cited for November shooting

VINALHAVEN – An island man was charged Thursday in the shooting of Colby Oakes on Nov. 21.

Lavon Ames III, 37, was summoned for reckless conduct with a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm.

Oakes, 22, also a Vinalhaven resident, admitted himself to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport on Nov. 22 with gunshot wounds to his legs and an arm.

Warden Service Spokesman Mark Latti said after the incident that law enforcement officials were frustrated in their efforts to find out how Oakes had been shot. Wardens spent time on the island investigating the shooting, but could not determine who was responsible.

A vehicle was impounded and taken to the state police Criminal Investigation Division lab in Augusta.

On Thursday, Latti said he could not reveal the details of the investigation, but said Oakes and Ames said they had gone to a gravel pit on the night of Nov. 21 to sight-in their rifles when Oakes was shot.

Ames was not arrested, Latti said, because wardens do not believe he is dangerous to the public.

Ames will appear in Rockland District Court on Feb. 13, Latti said.
