Three Maine residents killed in weekend car accidents

Three people were killed in separate accidents on Maine highways over the weekend.

A Monticello man died and two people remained hospitalized Sunday after a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 1 in Bridgewater, reported at 6:47 p.m. Friday.

State police reported that Richard Sewall, 33, of Monticello, was pronounced dead around midnight at Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle where he was taken by Crown Ambulance.

Police said that Sewall, owner and operator of a 1985 Chevrolet pickup, was traveling south when his vehicle apparently crossed into the northbound lane. He attempted to swerve into the southbound lane when his vehicle struck the front of a northbound 1987 Dodge Dakota pickup, owned and operated by George Merriam, 22, of Presque Isle, according to state police.

A passenger in the Sewall vehicle, Jane Foster, 31, of Monticello, and Merriam remained hospitalized Sunday and were listed in stable condition, said state police.

Police said there was poor visibility at the time because of rain.

Police reported that no seat belts were worn and both vehicles were destroyed.

Investigating the accident was Trooper David McPherson of Mars Hill, assisted by Sgt. Barry Smith of Island Falls, and Trooper David Socoby of Monticello.

Shortly after midnight on Route 41 in Chesterville, 19-year-old Ann Jackson of Farmington was killed when her car went out of control and rolled over several times, landing on its roof and partially ejecting the victim.

A passenger, Glenn Robinson, 22, of Farmington, was taken for treatment to Franklin Memorial Hospital, authorities said.

Jackson was driving south on the roadway around 12:30 a.m. when the accident occurred.

Also on Friday night, a Dixmont man was killed when his vehicle drifted across Route 9 in Newburgh and hit a tree, authorities said.

The victim was identified as David A. Butterfield, 33.

State police said the accident occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m.
