HELSINKI, Finland – Former University of Maine All-American defenseman Eric Weinrich scored the game-winning goal in the United States’ 4-1 win over Czechoslovakia in the World Championships here on Saturday.
Weinrich, a New Jersey Devils defenseman, scored on a power play at the 10:21 mark of the first period off assists from Chicago’s Jeremy Roenick and the New York Rangers’ Tony Amonte. The U.S., now 1-1, took a 3-0 lead in the first period en route to the win. Todd Krygier had two goals for the U.S., Danton Cole had the other, and John Vanbiesbrouck made 34 saves.
