FARMINGTON – Two-run homers in the first inning by James Writer and Tom Ventura led the University of Maine-Farmington to a 7-2 victory over Bates College and a sweep of their baseball doubleheader Tuesday.
Writer doubled home Keith LeBlanc with two outs in the third inning as the Beavers won the opener 1-0.
In the first game, UMF pitcher Zach Reed outdueled Bates’ Mike Kinsman for the win.
Reed tossed a six-hitter with four strikeouts and walked none, while Kinsman allowed only three hits, struck out four, and also walked none.
In the second game, Writer added a single and finished with three RBIs.

At Framingham, Mass., Millinocket’s Darrin Daniels hit a two-run home run and singled to help lead a 15-hit attack by the University of Southern Maine.
Ryan Adams had three singles for the USM Huskies. Andy Lang, Brian Marshall and Darren Meader each singled twice.
