Collins seeking re-election

CARIBOU — State Sen. Donald F. Collins, R-Caribou, has announced he is a candidate for re-election in Maine State Senate District 2.

Collins, who has served three terms in the Senate and one term in the House of Representatives, is a member of the Banking and Insurance Committee. In previous sessions, he served on the Labor, State and Local Government, and Taxation committees.

Collins described himself as an advocate of small business, agriculture and the University of Maine System. In 1987, he played a leading role in reform of the Workers’ Compensation law. Two years later, he helped put together a comprehensive health care package for the Legislature.

Election officials said Collins was unopposed so far.

He was a co-sponsor in 1987 of a bond issue for the University of Maine. This year he sponsored legislation calling for a bond issue to reauthorize funding for municipal waste and water treatment facilities.

“I want very much to help Aroostook County to grow and prosper,” said Collins. “I think it can be done while maintaining the quality of our environment, and I would like to continue to play a role in that process.”

A Caribou native, Collins is the fourth generation to operate the family-owned business in Caribou. He serves as a director of the Maine National Bank, the Maine Mutual Fire Insurance Co. and of Maine Public Service Co. In 1989, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and Industry recognized him as business leader of the year.

Collins is active in civic affairs. He has served on the board of directors of Cary Medical Center, the Maine Community Foundation and as president of the University of Maine at Presque Isle Foundation. He is a past president of the Caribou Rotary Club, and of the Caribou and State chambers of commerce.

A former mayor of Caribou, Collins served on the city council and as a trustee of the Caribou Utilities District.

He is married to the former Patricia McGuigan of Port Jervis, N.Y. They have six children.

District 2 consists of the cities of Caribou and Presque Isle, the towns of Allagash, Ashland, Castle Hill, Chapman, Eagle Lake, Mapleton, Perham, Portage Lake, St. Francis, Wade, Washburn, Westmanland, Nashville and St. John, and the unorganized territories of Northwest Aroostook County and Square Lake.
