Joe Alvarez helps Husson golf team win Region X championship

DENNIS, Mass. – Joe Alvarez shot a 36-hole total of 147 Wednesday, leading Husson College of Bangor to the NAIA Region X golf championship at Dennis Highlands Golf Club.

Alvarez was the medalist for the event, which was condensed into one day because of poor weather expected for Thursday.

Husson posted a score of 604 to easily outdistance runner-up Delhi College (649) and third-place Dominican (659), both from New York. The Braves, who also received a 149 (73-76) from Corey Pion, have qualified for the NAIA national championships scheduled May 14-17 at Palm City, Fla.

Baseball

Bates sweeps UM-Presque Isle

At Presque Isle, Rob Maguire racked up six hits in two games of a doubleheader, including a leadoff homer, as the Bobcats rolled to a 14-2 win in the first game and an 8-1 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, John Furbush fanned 10 and walked two in the five-hitter for Bates of Lewiston. Maguire hit a home run, a double and a single and drove in three runs. Jason Pinkham doubled and singled, and John O’Neill singled twice and drove in two runs.

Josh Berry drove in a run for the Owls on a groundout.

In the second game, Maguire hit three singles. Ben Donaldson had two RBIs on a double and a single. Nate Maxwell doubled, singled and drove in a run.

Greg Ingalls led UMPI with two singles and an RBI. Tony Garreans singled and scored the lone Owls’ run. Sam Michaud struck out nine in the loss.

Southern Maine 6, Keene State 1

At Keene, N.H., the sixth-seeded Huskies rode the 10-strikeout performance of Melissa Henderson as they upset No. 3 Keene State in Little East Conference tournament action.

Southern Maine of Gorham advances into the four-team double-elimination tourney, and will take on No. 2 Plymouth State next.

Renee Heath, who also scored on a passed ball, plated Sunshine Anders with a triple. Sarah McLean slammed a solo homer to put the win on ice.

Saint Joseph’s sweeps Bates

At Standish, Suzanne Picard drove in three runs in each game to lead Saint Joseph’s to a 6-5 and 8-0 doubleheader sweep over Bates of Lewiston.

Picard tripled in the first game and homered and singled in the second game. Kelly Premo chipped in with two singles and three RBIs in the second game.

Kahler Dowling earned the win with three innings of relief in the first game while Kristen Gaudette pitched six strong innings to pick up the victory in the second game.

Carla Flaherty doubled and singled for Bates in the first game and Lindsay Mayock singled twice. Cami Dyson singled twice in the second game.
