Detroit man in hospital after cemetery beating

DETROIT – Somerset County deputies are investigating a serious beating at a Detroit cemetery early Monday morning.

David Charrier, 42, of Detroit was hospitalized at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with two broken cheekbones, broken eye sockets, a broken nose and other head injuries.

Somerset County Deputy Matt Cunningham said Wednesday that the attack “was a pretty serious incident” and was on the level of elevated aggravated assault.

Hospital personnel would release no information on Charrier’s condition Wednesday, but Cunningham said Charrier “was improving” and still a patient Wednesday afternoon.

Charrier reported to Cunningham that he was assaulted when he went to a friend’s grave site early Monday. The assault was reported to police by emergency room staff at Sebasticook Valley Hospital at 2:48 a.m. Monday.

Cunningham said Charrier was unable to provide much information the night of the attack due to the injuries to his face, but that the investigation is continuing and suspects have been questioned. “I hope to wrap this up in a few days,” he said.
