Host homes needed for teen-age students

The World Educational Student Travel Programs Inc. is looking for host families in the Greater Bangor area who would be willing to include a 13- to 19-year-old Spanish or French student in their home for one month this summer.

WEST is based in New York and is approved by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel. All students who participate are carefully screened, have at least two years of English, are accompanied by a chaperone who travels with them and will stay in Maine throughout the month, and who truly want to experience American culture.

Host families also are carefully selected, are at least partially compensated for extra food costs incurred, and demonstrate a willingness to share their experiences with others from another culture.

Events already planned for students, and their host families, include orientation and farewell parties and a trip to Boston. The best experiences will be participating in the daily activities of a family and community.

The application process is beginning now. Single parents and those without children or with children not yet teen-agers are welcome to apply. Also, families planning vacation or travel during the summer are welcome.

WEST homestays are an excellent alternative to longer programs or may serve as an introduction to intercultural exchanges for those considering similar programs later.

For more information or materials contact Joan R. Gass, local WEST coordinator, at 945-6140, or write her at P.O. Box 2778, Bangor 04401.
