Camden senator sponsoring bill on tuition vouchers

CAMDEN — Sen. Linda Curtis Brawn, R-Camden, has sponsored a bill that would allow parents to choose what school their children attend. It would establish a tuition voucher program in which the State Department of Education would direct funds allotted for a particular student to the school that student attends.

All public schools and schools currently approved for tuition purposes could participate in the program. In addition, private schools where programs qualify under compulsory education laws of the state could have the option of participating.

The bill is currently pending before the Legislature’s Education Committee, of which Brawn, a former school teacher, is a member.

This bill, if enacted, may mean that some private schools would have to comply with some federal regulations they are not currently governed by, such as non-discriminatory practices. But Brawn said that most private schools choosing to accept voucher students should not have a problem meeting those requirements.
