ORONO – The Arcady Music Society announced the results of the annual Melba Wilson Arcady youth competition held April 27 at the University of Maine. Seven winners were selected from a pool of 31 registrants ranging in age from 9 to 17.

The 2002 winners are Henry Chen (piano) of South Berwick; Jason Chen Fan (piano) of Falmouth; Kelsey Hudson (violin) of Blue Hill; Nina and Clare Monfredo (violin-cello duo) of Seal Harbor; Molly C. Nichols (harp) of Machiasport; Emma Stanley (trumpet) of Lamoine; and Sarah St. Dennis (soprano) of Bar Harbor.

A special commendation recognizing excellence in teaching was awarded to William Whitener of Lamoine. Ten of Whitener’s students competed on wind instruments in this year’s competition.

The goal of the Melba Wilson Arcady youth competition is to further the musicianship and careers of talented students of classical music in Maine by providing them with opportunities to perform with professional musicians.

Winners of the competition are selected according to overall performance ability and promise, with consideration given to age and years of study.
