All-Star action today for Little Leaguers

The road to Williamsport, Pa., site of the Little League World Series, is a lengthy one. There are many stops along the way and only a handful of teams make it.

For hundreds of aspiring baseball players in the state of Maine, that road begins in earnest on Tuesday when Little League All-Star playoff action gets under way in Districts 2 and 3.

Eight games are scheduled for Tuesday, including two contests that were rained out on Monday. In District 3 action, Hampden visits Bangor West, Acadian of Bar Harbor travels to Bangor East, Brewer hosts Bucksport and Millinocket entertains Old Town. Machias takes on Calais and Katahdin plays Loring-Limestone.

Defending District 3 champion Coastal of Blue Hill received a first-round bye.

District 2 contests include Waldo at Belfast, the defending district champion, and Rockland faces Knox Suburban.

All games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

In District 3 Little League Softball action, Bangor West travels to Bucksport at 5 p.m. in a game that was rained out on Monday.

The double-elimination tournaments will pare the field down to one team from each district. Those winners will advance to the five-team State Little League Tournament.

The teams competing for district and state honors are made up of All-Star players from the cities and towns in their respective areas.

District 3 is split up into three divisions: Penobscot, Aroostook and Washington counties. Acadian of Bar Harbor, Bangor West, Bangor East, Brewer, Bucksport, Hampden, Millinocket and Old Town represent the Penobscot group.

Border of Monticello, Houlton, Katahdin of Island Falls, Loring-Limestone and Mars Hill make up the Aroostook contingent, while Machias, Calais and Eastport are the Washington County representatives.

In District 2, the competing teams are Belfast, Camden, Knox Suburban, Rockland, Waldo County of Brooks and Waldoboro.

NOTE: The NEWS requests that a coach or team representative call in the results of each game. The report should include: the final score, the score by innings, the total runs, hits and errors, the first and last names of all pitchers and catchers, repeat hitters and players who had key hits, for BOTH TEAMS.

The NEWS’ toll-free number is 1-800-660-8033. Please call as soon as possible after the completion of your game.
