Falcons trip Calais to near state berth

CALAIS – The Brewer Falcons came a step closer to clinching their sixth consecutive State American Legion Tournament berth by outlasting Calais 10-7 here Friday night in the first game of a Zone 1 doubleheader. The second game was rained out.

Brewer needs only one win in its remaining three games or an Old Town-Orono loss to Bangor on Saturday night to sew up a state AL berth.

Brewer will entertain Penquis in a makeup game on Saturday at 1 and will host Bangor in a nine-inning game on Sunday at 1. If Brewer loses both games and Old Town-Orono beats Bangor in a Saturday night make-up game at Bangor’s Garland Street Field (7:30), the Falcons would have to travel to Calais on Monday night to make up the second game of Friday’s twinbill.

If Brewer and Old Town-Orono tie, a Tuesday playoff game would be held.

Mathematically, Brewer could still tie Skowhegan for first place with three wins and three Skowhegan losses over the weekend.

The Friday night game between Bangor and Old Town-Orono was postponed.

On Friday night, Jamie White’s three-run homer in the third inning erased a 2-0 deficit and the Falcons got four more runs in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead on two walks, an error, a bases-loaded walk to Robbie Beaton, Greg White’s two-run single and Aaron Chambers’ RBI base hit.

Brewer built the lead to 10-4 and withstood a Calais rally to improve its record to 19-6.

Chris Sherrard had hit a two-run homer in the first to stake Calais to its lead.

Winning pitcher Greg White had a double and two singles for Brewer, Beaton doubled and singled and Marshall Tracy hit a two-run homer. Sherrard had a single to go with his homer for 7-19 Calais, John Francis knocked in two runs with a double and a single and Noah Tapley hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

Al Perkins picked up the save.
