I have just received notice to serve as a traverse juror in the Superior Court in Bangor.
While I in no way wish to shirk my “duty and privilege to citizenship,” I find it interesting that our precious state Legislature has generously authorized the court to pay jurors a solid $10 for each day (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) served, plus mileage at the rate of 15 cents per.
I feel fortunate that I will be earning a grand $19 a day during my mandatory 15 days of service to the state. Ah, duty! Ah, privilege!
Of course, I hope and expect to see several state legislators sitting next to me in the jurors’ box earning their $19 a day as well — or have they all gone to Orlando? Stephen D. Carpenteri Newport
