Several Maine colleges will hold commencements during the next few days.

Bangor Theological Seminary will celebrate its 183rd commencement at 1 p.m. Friday, May 24, when 15 students will receive degrees during outdoor services.

The Rev. Mary Luti, senior minister of First Church in Cambridge, Mass., will deliver the commencement address. Established in 1863, the church is one of the oldest continuing congregations in the country.

Awards for scholastic achievement also will be presented.

In the case of bad weather, the ceremony will be held at nearby Hammond Street Congregational Church. Bus transportation from the seminary parking lot will be provided.

American playwright Arthur Kopit will speak during Colby College’s commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 26.

More than 460 members of the graduating class will receive degrees during the ceremony, which will be held on the lawn in front of Miller Library on the Waterville campus.

Kopit has twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in drama. The musical “Nine,” for which he was the book author, won the 1982 Tony Award for best musical.

Tickets will be required if bad weather moves the ceremony to the Alfond Athletic Center.

Bowdoin College will award 410 bachelor’s degrees during its 197th commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Brunswick campus.

Since 1806, Bowdoin’s graduating seniors have been commencement speakers.

Dr. Kenneth Paigen, director and senior scientist at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, will address graduates and their families at the college’s baccalaureate service at 3 p.m., Friday, May 24, at First Parish Church in Brunswick.

Bates College will hold its 136th commencement at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, in an outdoor ceremony on the quad in front of Coram Library in Lewiston.

The speaker will be Steven Weinberg, winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics and a theoretical physicist at the University of Texas.

In the event of rain, graduation will be held in the nearby Margaret Hopkins Merrill Gymnasium.
