Unity Rams defeat Husson 2-1

You’ve seen it hundreds of times.

A soccer team gets an early goal, dominates play but doesn’t take advantage of its chances. Then the other team capitalizes on a rare opportunity, begins to play better and eventually wins.

That is exactly what happened at the Husson College Field in Bangor as the Unity College Rams upset Husson 2-1.

Unity is now 4-3-1 while Husson fell to 5-5-1.

Chris Steppe’s second goal in as many games gave Husson a 1-0 lead just 2:30 into the game. The Braves went on to outshoot the Rams 20-6 over the first 45 minutes but the Steppe goal was all they could muster. Unity goalie Rick Dreves made 10 saves and the Braves missed the net several times.

Jim Kneeland tied the game just 1:44 into the second half and the Rams got the game-winner with 14:24 remaining when freshman wing Peter Abello converted a long pass from sophomore wing Marc Goldberg. It was Abello’s third goal.

At halftime, senior sweeper Kneeland asked Unity Coach Gary Zane to move him up to the midfield where he could team with senior Dan Menard.

“At least we could control some balls and slow them (Husson) down,” explained Kneeland.

They did just that and also teamed up on the tying goal.

Winger Goldberg did some nice maneuvering with the ball in the midfield and got it to Menard, who broke down the left wing before passing it to Kneeland.

“I was all alone and Dan gave me a nice pass,” said Kneeland. “The goalie (Jason Brewer) was back on his line so all I had to do was place it.”

Kneeland’s 18-yarder slid between Brewer and the post to the goalie’s right.

Husson continued to carry the play but Unity received a big lift from the Kneeland goal and limited the Braves to only 8 second-half shots at goal.

“We played much better in the second half,” said Zane. “We had very good defensive positioning.”

The game-winning goal came on a quick counter attack and Goldberg lofted a long ball to Abello, positioned to the right of the penalty area.

“I think I split two of their defenders and Marc’s ball came right to my chest so I knocked it down,” said Abello. “I expected the goalie to come out but he didn’t so I went for the far post. My sister could have kicked that one in.”

Husson had taken its 1-0 lead when Steppe converted a Gary Thompson pass with an 11-yarder off the far post.

The Braves had several good scoring chances among their 20 first-half shots but Dreves made a nice diving stop on Jason Hill’s 16-yarder and knocked down another Hill drive later in the half. Hill fired wide on a couple more chances.

In the second half, Hill generated a few more chances including a seven-yarder that just missed the far post.

Later, Hill was fouled as he broke into the penalty area but it was ruled to have occurred outside the area.

Husson finished with a 28-10 shot margin. Dreves made 13 stops and Brewer had one.

“We had our chances, that’s for sure,” said Husson Coach Bill Ashby. “I’m deeply disappointed with our team. We played well with the ball and we moved it around nicely but we lacked defensive intensity without the ball. We didn’t pressure the ball well.”
