BANGOR – With 30 seconds to play and a five-point lead in an Eastern Maine Class C quarterfinal, the Hodgdon Hawks did something they knew was a major-league tourney mistake.
They took a win for granted.
“We got a little confident. We got a little cocky,” Hodgdon junior Tyler Putnam said after Hodgdon had escaped with a 70-66 win … in overtime. “It was a little learning experience for us.”
Fourth-seeded Hodgdon improves to 16-3 and will face undefeated No. 1 seed Piscataquis Community of Guilford at 8:35 p.m. Friday in the regional semifinals.
Washington Academy of East Machias winds up 12-6.
What the Hawks learned in the closing seconds of regulation was this: Don’t let Bobby Richardson shoot the ball.
Richardson temporarily hijacked the victory parade by raining in a 3-pointer and scoring a layup off a steal in the final 22 seconds to send the game into overtime.
Richardson also accounted for the first five Washington Academy points of overtime on another 3-pointer and a layup.
But after the second hoop – off an inbounds play with 2:14 to go – the Hodgdon defense didn’t allow him another look at the basket until he scored an inconsequential buzzer-beating layup.
Putnam deserves much of the credit for that, as he made three steals in overtime to help Hodgdon take control.
“Tyler, when he wants to, can really turn it up on defense,” Hodgdon coach Rob Moran said. “He’s quick and he’s 6-4, and he’s got long arms. He cuts down passing lanes and does a good job denying the ball when he wants to.”
He also can turn it up on offense. … and on the boards.
Putnam scored 25 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, handed out six assists, made five steals and blocked four shots in a dominant individual performance.
Hodgdon got 24 more points and 11 rebounds from Jeremy Kervin.
Richardson paced the Raiders of East Machias with 26 points and seven rebounds. Vinny Emery added 17 points and Nick Reynolds scored 10 before fouling out with 33 seconds to play in regulation.
WA coach Chad Fitzsimmons said credited the Hodgdon defense and said the Raiders found it hard to carry the momentum after the frantic finish at the end of the fourth quarter.
“I’ve seen a lot of games like that,” he said. “More often than not it seems like the team that has given up the lead ends up recovering it.”
