The owner told police that vandals previously had spray-painted the word “Crip” on one of the outside walls and had ripped off shingles from the side of the building.

Burke told police she had looked both ways and had not seen any oncoming vehicles, but was broadsided by a truck headed north as soon as she pulled onto Broadway, Small said. Police estimated that her 1995 Volkswagen car had $4,500 in damage.

The driver of the truck, George McLaughlin, 45, of Holden, was not injured, although his 1998 Ford pickup had an estimated $3,500 in damage, Small said. It was not known whether either of the two were wearing seat belts.
