Mt. Blue High School of Farmington swept the Class A championships, while the Madawaska girls and the Freeport boys claimed the Class C titles in the Maine high school skiing state championships, which wound up Wednesday at two sites.

At Sugarloaf/USA in Carrabassett Valley, Emily Lavertu’s first-place finish Wednesday in the 5K Classical Cross Country event helped the Owls claim the Class C girls championship. Madawaska scored 80 points, easily beating runner-up Jay (218 points) and third-place Freeport (302).

Lavertu, who also won the giant slalom and finished third in the slalom and the Freestyle XC events, earned the Skimeister award given to the meet’s top performer.

Rosa Londano of Madawaska was second in the Skimeister standings after finishing second in the GS, fourth in the slalom and 12th in both cross country races.

In Wednesday’s Classical XC event, Lavertu won in 17 minutes, 44 seconds. Hillary Easter of Jay was only three seconds behind, while Crystal D’Amboise of Madawaska placed third in 19:06.

Freeport held off Madawaska 233-244 for the Class C boys crown. The Falcons took fourth in Wednesday’s Classical XC to preserve their slim lead. Falmouth wound up third in the team scoring with 358 points.

Erik-Lars Siren of Madawaska was the individual winner in the Classical Cross Country race with a time of 14:10. Chad Wright (14:52) and Nick Scott (15:36) of Monmouth Academy were second and third, respectively.

Jay’s Philip Gagnon was named the Skimeister after earning four top-five finishes, including fifth in Wednesday’s XC Classical event. Bruce Stevens of Lee Academy was second and Freeport’s Peter Schwanda was third.

In the Class A meet at Lonesome Pine Trails in Fort Kent, the Mt. Blue girls won Wednesday’s Classical Cross Country event to complete their sweep of the four disciplines. The Cougars scored 84 points while Leavitt of Turner Center (218) and Edward Little of Auburn (265) finished second and third, respectively.

Hannah Bogar of Mt. Blue was the Classical XC winner Wednesday in 22:01. Megan Dumais of Leavitt was second (22:42) and Mt. Blue’s Elena Yates took third (22:54).

Molly Hardy was sixth in the Classical XC on her way to the girls Class A Skimeister award. Dumais was second and Samantha Johnson of Mountain Valley was third.

The Mt. Blue boys also wrapped up the Class A boys title by winning the Classical XC. The Cougars scored 183 points to outlast runner-up Edward Little (216) and third-place Telstar of Bethel (267).

Seth Hubbard of Mt. Blue won the Classical XC in 19:25, followed by Jared Kuvaja of Edward Little (19:45) and Fred Bailey of Telstar (20:22).

Eric Levesque of Fort Kent claimed the Skimeister honor by virtue of placing second in the giant slalom, fifth in the slalom, 14th in the Freestyle XC and 30th in the Classical XC.

Andy Broomhall of Mountain Valley and Tim Dumond of Fort Kent placed second and third, respectively, in the Skimeister scoring.

The Class B state championship meet opens Thursday at Sunday River in Newry.
