The board of directors of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra has appointed Xiao-Lu Li as its new music director and conductor. The search committee unanimously recommended Li to the symphony board of directors, who accepted the nomination with great enthusiasm.

Li responded with equal enthusiasm to his appointment. “I am absolutely honored and privileged to have been chosen to be the Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s music director,” he said.

“There is not enough in the English language for me to find the proper words to tell how much I enjoy all of you who I met in Bangor,” he said. “I will give my best to continue building a good orchestra.”

Tammy Chretien is among an elite group of Allstate insurance agents who recently earned the Personal Financial Representative title.

Chretien will provide her customers variable annuity, variable life and mutual fund products, in addition to auto, homeowner and life insurance.

Chretien received the title after passing securities license exams and completing an extensive Allstate training curriculum.

She is affiliated with the broker dealer Allstate Financial Services, LLC.

St. John’s Episcopal Church invites you to a free performance by the Mount View Chamber Singers 7 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at the church, 225 French St. (behind John Bapst Memorial High School).

The a capella high school singing group recently returned from a tour that included singing at ground zero in New York City. While on tour, the group is promoting a new CD they recorded at St. John’s during Holy Week 2002.

A portion of the proceeds of the sale of the CD will benefit the victims of Sept. 11 through the American Red Cross.

The St. John’s Youth Fellowship is organizing a drive for teens to do volunteer work with other teens to enrich the lives of others. Tasks include serving and preparing food for the homeless, giving attention to animals at shelters and helping out children’s nature camp. The program starts July 8. Registration is required. BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA recently honored outstanding community volunteers at its annual volunteer recognition celebration.

During the past year, according to a press release, the Bangor YMCA received more than 18,000 volunteer hours from 550 individuals for more than 5,200 tasks with a value of more than $274,000.

The volunteer celebration was a way to recognize those contributions.

G. Clifton Eames and William P. Lucy were inducted into the Bangor YMCA Hall of Fame.

Eames is a past member of the Bangor YMCA board. He chaired a division of the YMCA capital campaign in the early 1990s.

Lucy is a past president of the Bangor YMCA board, and was one of this year’s top fund-raisers during the annual Giving Campaign. They were cited for their dedication to the goals of the Bangor YMCA.

Other award winners were:

. Kimberly Beaulier, Volunteer of the Year Award;

. Matt Hassler, Youth Service Award;

. Rick Fournier, Willey Board Award;

. Al Soucie, Employee of the Year Award;

. Patrick Gaetani, Giving Campaign Chairman’s Award.

Staff Service Awards were given to Rhonda Arsenault, Jim Bentley, Kelly Blush, Courtney Collins, Brenda Dickson, Stacey Gilmore, Lydia Morgan, Linda Ross, Jason Rossignol and Kristie Shaw.

Hampden

In conjunction with the Hampden Post Office Appreciation Day celebration May 15, a coloring contest was held for the children of McGraw and Weatherbee schools. Pupils were asked to submit a picture from their own drawings or from a coloring book.

Entries were displayed in the post office lobby and ballots were provided for customers to judge them in three categories: best inside the lines, best colors and best original drawing.

Awards were given to first- and second-place winners in each category and a certificate for participation was given to each pupil who submitted a picture.

Postmaster Bunny Gibson presented the awards at the schools May 17.

Inside the lines winners were: first place, Ryan Flanagan, 7, McGraw School; second place, Jordan Smith, 9, Weatherbee School.

Best colors winners were: first place, Michaela Hoffman, 8, Weatherbee School; and second place, Katie Chambers, 10, Weatherbee School.

Best original drawing winners were: first place, Sarah Flagg, 10, Weatherbee School; second place, Leighton Sovis, 8, McGraw School.
