Washburn District High School

WASHBURN – Principal Rick Bragg of Washburn District High School has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2002. Commencement exercises will be held 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, at the school.

Jason Thomas, son of Fred and Beverly Thomas of Washburn, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2002. He will attend the University of Maine at Orono to study computer engineering.

He has been involved with the Civil Rights team, Students Against Substance Abuse team, varsity club, varsity club treasurer, French club, National Honor Society, National Honor Society treasurer, D.A.R.E. role model, yearbook staff, Junior Exhibition emcee, class secretary-treasurer, senior play, Ms. Washburn contest, volleyball, basketball, and baseball manager.

Thomas has received the following academic honors: school citizenship award, Maine Scholars Achievement Award, National Honor Roll, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, Student of the Month, Maine Principal’s Award recipient, and highest average in health, geometry, French I, French II, biology, algebra II, world history, English II, chemistry, advanced math, world geography, U.S. history, English III, physics, calculus, government and English IV. He was the highest-ranking student in his class all four years.

Kate Morrow, daughter of Leigh and Pat Morrow of Washburn, has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2002. She will attend Middlebury College in Vermont to study physics.

She has been involved with Students Against Substance Abuse team, D.A.R.E. role model, varsity club, Odyssey of the Mind, Destination Imagination, Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp, chorus, show choir, French club, student council, class president, National Honor Society, National Honor Society secretary, yearbook staff, Dirigo Girls State senator, senior play, Gifted and Talented acting, cross-country, soccer, junior varsity and varsity basketball.

Morrow has received the following academic awards: school citizenship award, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, AAA honor roll, All-Aroostook Chorus, perfect attendance, Math Fax Divs. 10 – second place, Certificate of Achievement from Maine Society of Women Engineers, National Merit Commended Scholar Award, and highest average English I, physical science and algebra II.

First honor part is Darren Pesut, son of Nick and Andrea Pesut of Crouseville. He will attend the University of New England in Biddeford to study physical therapy.

He has been involved with the French club, varsity club, varsity club president, Students Against Substance Abuse team, band, National Honor Society, yearbook staff, student council, D.A.R.E. role model, senior play, Ms. Washburn contest, volleyball, baseball, varsity basketball, soccer and cross-country.

His academic honors include: school citizenship award, perfect attendance, honor roll, AAA honor roll, Student of the Month, Maine Scholars Achievement Award, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and highest average in anatomy-physiology.

Second honor part is Craig Hunt, son of Chuck and Kathi Irvine of Crouseville. He will attend Berkshire Institute for Christian Studies in Massachusetts.

He has been involved with the Civil Rights team, Odyssey of the Mind, Destination Imagination, chorus, All-Aroostook chorus, show choir, French club, varsity club, Dirigo Boys State, Future Farmers of America, National Honor Society, National Honor Society president, yearbook staff, senior play, Junior Exhibition, Ms. Washburn contest, and Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership team.

His academic honors include: school citizenship award, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, Student of the Month, Dirigo Boys State Honor, Outstanding Omer Award, highest average accounting 1, honor roll and 90+ overall average.
