Star City Tournament

HUSSON vs. UM-FORT KENT

Time, site: Saturday, 6 p.m., at Wieden Gymnasium,Presque Isle; (Consolation, Sunday, 1 p.m.; Championship, Sunday, 3 p.m.)

Records: Husson 0-0; UMFK 1-1

Key players: Husson – (Last year’s stats) G Vicki Mazerall (6.8 ppg, 3.6 spg), G Kristi Wildman (7.8 ppg), F Anne Cote (6.6 ppg), F Michelle Hamlin (9.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg), C Stephanie Lebel; UMFK – F Benita Martin (16.0 ppg), G Betsy Mitchell (14.0 ppg), F Sue Maddocks (11 ppg), G Lynn McBrearity (6.0 ppg)

Outlook: Husson, which lost six seniors from a year ago, looked sloppy in an intrasquad game earlier this week. Still, the polls place Husson 20th in the nation for NAIA Div. II schools. On the perimeter, the Braves can burn an opponent. The team’s big question mark, however, is in the paint. UMFK, under NAIA District 5 Coach of the Year Ed Marshall, has improved record-wise over the last two seasons. Martin scored at a 23 ppg clip last season. How point guard McBrearity handles Husson’s pressure will be a key.

UM-PRESQUE ISLE vs. LYNDON STATE

Time, site: Saturday, 8 p.m., at Wieden Gym, Presque Isle

Records: UMPI 1-0, Lyndon State 1-0

Key players: UMPI – G Beth Corrow (19 ppg), F Deb Draper (14 ppg, 10 rpg), G-F Jennifer MacDonald (17 ppg), G Michelle Davis; Lyndon State – C Jennifer Beenen (18 ppg), F Heather Root (14 ppg), G Sheila Leahy (10 ppg), F Kirsten Gallagher (8 ppg).

Outlook: After finishing 5-16 last season, the tournament-host Owls are looking for much better things. Draper, All-District pick last year, is a tough inside player, and Corrow can hit the three. Sue Henry’s Lyndon State squad is a team in transition with five letterwinners gone and only three veterans back. Leahy and Root are big keys. Beenen is a freshman. Lyndon State beat UMFK 61-54 last weekend.
