BANGOR – Principal Dr. Richard Bach of Bangor Christian Schools has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2002. Commencement exercises will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Bangor Christian School.

Rachel McLeod, daughter of Jeff and Patty McLeod of Levant, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2002. She will spend two weeks at Tufts University of Veterinary Medicine this summer at a seminar and will work in the lab at the University of Maine for 10 weeks. She plans to attend the University of Maine in the fall to study microbiology.

McLeod is a National Merit Commended Scholar, USAA All-American Scholar, and ASCI Distinguished Christian High School Student. She has won the Bausch & Lomb Science Award, won first place in the State Science Fair in 1999 and 2001, the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, and is on the high honors honor roll. She won academic awards in biology, Spanish II and III, geography, government, American literature and Bible. She has been a member of 4-H, the Spanish Club and the Math Club. She was grand marshal for 2000-2001 graduation ceremonies and was chosen the National Honor Society student of the month. She has participated in Helping Hands at Bangor Christian School and has served as a helper in children’s church at Faith Baptist Church.

Naomi Pier, daughter of Cathy Pier and the late Paul Pier of East Corinth, has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2002. She will attend Evangel College next year.

She is a member of the National Honor Society. She has received the Gordon College Scholar Award, the President’s Award for Educational Excellence and the HOBY Award. She was named a Distinguished Christian High School Student and received the National Merit Commended recognition.

Pier has been on the varsity cheering squad for four years and was the captain this year. She was a nominee for the National Cheerleading Association All-American Team, Cheer Limited All-Star, and Penobscot Valley Conference All-Star. She participated in the school’s track and cross-country teams. She teaches a children’s church class, and was on a missions trip to New York City and two mission trips to Mexico.
