Hampden contractor says truck was stolen

A Hampden contractor working on the roof of a home on Fifth Street in Bangor reported that his pickup truck was stolen early Tuesday morning.

The contractor narrowed down the time of the theft to a 10- to 15-minute window between trips to his truck while working on the home at 26 Fifth St. Tread marks could be seen on the road where the truck apparently sped off, although the contractor told Officer Brent Beaulieu that he didn’t see anything and, because the air compressor was on, he didn’t hear anything.

But one resident noted seeing a teen-ager, probably between the ages of 15 and 17 with frizzy black unkempt hair in the area for about 20 minutes before the truck was noticed missing. The youth was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. The resident said the youth looked like a youth he had seen staying at the Shaw House, a shelter for runaway teens.

Beaulieu checked the area for the missing truck and alerted area agencies to be on the lookout for the truck. A computer check of the youth the resident thought he saw outside came up with two addresses in Milford and Beaulieu asked authorities covering those areas to keep an eye out for the vehicle.

The 1992 red Ford pickup truck had a ladder rack and ladder on it as well as a black toolbox and tools in the bed of the truck.

A lawn tractor, valued at $9,000, along with several thousand dollars in assorted attachments was reported stolen from a maintenance shed at the Glenridge Apartments off Colburn Drive in Orono on Tuesday morning.

While getting into the building was apparently fairly easy – it was left unlocked – it took some doing to get the John Deer tractor. The burglar or burglars had to move other equipment out of the way, including pushing another tractor out of the way and into an embankment, reported Officer Richard Bryant. The theft was reported to police about 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, although it wasn’t clear when the theft actually took place.

The maintenance building was dusted for fingerprints and the case remains under investigation, according to police.
