Prominent Bangor physician dies > Dr. Martyn Vickers was active in community organizations.

A prominent Bangor physician, Dr. Martyn A. Vickers, 85, died Jan. 2, 1992, at a local nursing home after a long illness.

Active in numerous community and civic organizations, Vickers served on the Bangor School Board for 15 years, and was its chairman for four years. He also became president of the Bangor Public Library Trustees in February 1971 and was charter chairman of the board of St. Michael’s Center. In addition, he was an instructor of physiology and a director for Husson College.

Vickers became chairman of the board of trustees for Bangor Savings Bank in 1972 and remained in that position until his retirement in June 1989.

The well-known doctor was born in Brownville Junction, Oct. 18, 1906, the son of Florance A. and Margaret E. (Bagot) Vickers. He was educated in Brownville Junction schools and received an AB degree in 1929 from the Catholic University. He graduated from Georgetown University with an M.D. degree in 1933.

Vickers was a prominent Bangor physician for more than 50 years, retiring in 1988. He was board certified in allergy and dermatology, and was a member of the American Medical Association and numerous medical and allergy associations. He was president of the Maine Medical Association and director of the Maine Pollen Survey.

The physician was past president of the medical staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center and served as chief of allergy at the Eastern Maine Medical Center.

An avid golfer, Vickers was a past participant in the Paul Bunyan Golf Tournament. He was a past president of the Penobscot Valley Country Club and also a member of the Old Guard Society of Palm Beach Golfers from 1970 to 1988. He also was a member of the Beach Club of Palm Beach, Fla..

Vickers was an honorary member of Pine Cone Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Vickers is survived by his wife, M. Hilda (Finnegan) Vickers; three daughters and sons-in-law; one son and daughter-in-law; 16 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters; one brother; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
