DEER ISLE — One of the largest turnouts on record returned incumbents to office in Deer Isle this week during the annual town meeting.

Facing a challenge for the first time in a number of years, First Selectman Neville Hardy garnered 522 votes to defeat John Harrington who received 139 votes.

Road Commissioner Maurice E. Robbins with 309 votes outdistanced challengers Frederick E. Chase and William J. Smith for another term. In the race for seats on school committee, Sonia D. Douglass won a one-year term defeating David J. Jones 383-242. Stephen Brown won the three-year seat on the board beating Bruce Sawyer by a 391-223 margin.

Running unopposed, other municipal officers were returned to office. They included Robert Haskell, second selectman, Victor Welcome, third selectman, Myra Weed, treasurer-tax collector, Charlotte Faye, tax collector, and Frank Davis, dump attendant.

Voters decided to increase salaries for municipal officers, raising Hardy’s salary by $500 and the salaries of the other two selectmen by $250. Other increases included a $500 increase for the treasurer-tax collector, and a $250 raise for the town clerk.

Residents also turned down a proposal from the Fire Department to build a training tower on town owned property near the village. Hardy said voters expressed concern about the amount of traffic that passed the location near the Sunshine Road and Route 15. Firefighters will look into another site offered by a resident during the meeting.
