BANGOR – Bangor Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice of Eastern Maine has been awarded a $15,000 Davis Family Foundation grant. The award will benefit Pathfinders summer sessions and a weekend summer camp. Pathfinders provides support for grieving children.

The first summer session will be held at Bangor Christian School from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays beginning June 25 and ending July 30.

BANGOR – More than 85 students from All Saints Catholic School in Bangor, Bangor Christian School, Holbrook School in Holden and State Street School in Brewer took part in Eastern Maine Healthcare’s AweSomeBODY classroom project. They built interactive exhibits that were displayed during the Eastern Maine Healthcare Wellness Fair at the Bangor Mall.

Each classroom was paired with clinical professionals from the Heart Center of Eastern Maine, EMMC’s Maine Rehabilitation Center, EMMC’s Rosen Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and LifeFlight of Maine to learn more about the human body and health and wellness issues.

All Saints Catholic School’s display, NICU Newborns, won a first-place award. State Street School’s Remarkable Recovery Rehab Center earned second place.

OLD TOWN – The Old Town-Orono YMCA will offer a pulmonary rehabilitation program beginning July 19 for individuals with respiratory problems.

“The class involves stretching, strength training and cardiovascular activity two times a week for an hour and a half,” said fitness director Maria Biron. “The primary goal of pulmonary rehab is to restore the patient to the highest level of independent function.”

Qualified health care staff will monitor each class member. A physician must refer participants to the class. For information, call 827-9622.

Correction: A Health News item in the June 13 edition of The Weekly gave an incorrect date for a pulmonary rehabilitation program. It will be held July 9 through the Old Town-Orono YMCA.
