2 age-group sessions set for baseball school

The snow is still coming down outside, but baseballs will be flying inside during the second year of The Baseball School.

The Baseball School, an instructional baseball program scheduled at the University of Maine field house in Orono, will be held during March for youngsters interested in improving their baseball skills.

In response to the overwhelming attendance at the inaugural Baseball School last year, when 210 players participated, this year’s program has been divided into two sessions. The Junior Division will run from March 2-5 for students in grades five through eight, with a Senior Division for players in grades nine through 12 slated for March 9-12.

The Baseball School will run from 4-6:30 p.m. daily and feature instruction in all facets of baseball fundamentals, including individualized teaching of the various positions. The cost is $40 per player, which includes a souvenir T-shirt.

Former Husson College and Old Town High School varsity baseball coach Jim Walsh and former Brewer High and Brewer American Legion coach Dennis Kiah head the staff of The Baseball School. They will be supported by a knowledgeable staff, which will include former New York Yankees manager Carl “Stump” Merrill of Topsham.

Other staff members include: former University of Maine star Andy Hartung, a player in the Chicago Cubs’ minor league system; former Mount Desert Island High and MDI Legion coach Dennis Damon; former UMaine standouts Tom Vanidestine, Dennis Libby, Jeff Paul, and Doug Carville; former Nokomis High coach Jim DiFrederico; former Hampden Academy coach Mike Connolly; and Randy Hutchins, a coach in the Old Town school system.

Each player should bring a glove, bat, cap, and sneakers. A long-sleeve baseball shirt or sweatshirt is recommended. Other necessary equipment will be provided.

In accordance with guidelines established by the Maine Secondary School Principals’ Association, the use of school-issued equipment or school transportation is prohibited. Active baseball coaches may neither work at nor observe any of the sessions.

For more information, contact Jim Walsh at 990-3828 or Dennis Kiah at 825-4555.
